***Share this with your friends, family, and community.*** The Brown Administration is trying to advance a budget trailer bill based on SB 623 (Monning) – a two-year bill from 2017 – which would establish a statewide drinking water tax, intended to assist disadvantaged communities that lack access to safe drinking water. If the Administration is not successful with the budget trailer bill, Sen. Willliam Monning is expected to try to move SB 623. There is a better way to solve the problem. The state can use a package of funds comprised of ongoing federal safe drinking water funds, general obligation bond funds, the assessments related to nitrates in groundwater proposed in the budget trailer bill and SB 623 and a limited amount of state general fund dollars. This package of funds is a far more appropriate way to address a problem that is a key social issue for the state.
